Taking Care of your Household Drains

All parts of the house need good maintenance from top to bottom – and the very bottom of the house which is often neglected is of course the drains! When drains are doing what they should be doing, we seldom give them a passing thought – it is only when things start to go wrong and we need to call in the experts to do CCTV Drainage Surveys that we realise the importance of paying attention and caring for our drains.

Here are a few things that you should do regularly to keep your drains working well and to prevent a small problem becoming a large one…

Pay attention to bathroom plugholes and clear hair and soap scum out. It can help to use soda crystals on a regular basis to keep plugholes clean and clear of blockages. They can be bought cheaply from most supermarkets.

In the kitchen it is a good idea to use a sieve to catch any debris that would otherwise end up going down the plug hole. Over time this builds up and doesn’t just cause blockages, but it can also cause a foul smell to come from it.

It is also important that you avoid putting some things into the drainage system. When washing up for example make sure that all plates are clear of food before putting them in the sink and also make sure that any fats and oils used are never poured into the plughole. This should be put into a separate container to be thrown in the household waste bin.
