Ways to help those with disabilities get around

The modern world was not designed with disabled people in mind. Stairs, steeped ramped areas, inaccessible doorways, and products placed on shelves that are too high for someone to reach are all daily features that a disabled person has to contend with. Recent changes to UK laws have seen a greater drive towards making things that able-bodied people take for granted more accessible to disabled persons. What features are available to make the lives of Disabled People more inclusive in our Society?

  1. WAV Vehicles, like those from Clarke Mobility, allow people in wheelchairs to be able to drive on regular UK roads and or be driven by family members to a destination that they wish to visit. These are specially constructed vehicles that are able to accommodate a chair either in the rear or in a roof rack system on the top.
  2. Changing existing buildings and sticking to new regulations. Where possible existing buildings, including historic properties, should make areas accessible to all. If this is not possible then pictures should be provided so that the person can see the room, or rooms that are inaccessible,

3. Adding handrails and walking assistance aids is also a good idea.

4. Forward shop planning. Making sure that all essential items are at an accessible level so that disabled people, especially wheelchair users, do not have to be constantly asking for help from assistants and or the public, which can be demeaning.
