How to wash a knitted blanket

When armfuls of care, love, time, and effort have been spent knitting a beautiful blanket, it is imperative that the finished article is kept clean and cared for correctly.

Wool is naturally stain-resistant, odour-resistant, and crease-resistant, meaning that it requires less washing than other items. However, most wool can be washed in lukewarm water or at a machine temperature of 30 degrees when required.

Washing Tips

When machine washing your knitted blanket, select a gentle detergent that is specially formulated for wool. Place the blanket into a net laundry bag, which will help to ensure that it is not over-agitated in the machine. Select a laundry cycle and temperature appropriate to your yarn.

Synthetic fibres, linen, and some cotton blends can be safely dried in a dryer. Blankets made from other yarns should be air-dried.

Alternatively, you can hand wash your knitted blanket. This is recommended for wool, cashmere or alpaca yarns. Use cold water, and a gentle detergent, and ensure that the blanket is air-dried well with plenty of ventilation.

As well as washing your blanket correctly, correct care should be taken when storing it away. Knitted items should be completely clean and dry before they are put away in a cupboard or chest. Knitted items should not be hung, as this may cause them to stretch.
