Feeling Down in January – How to Give your Mood a Boost

After Christmas many people can feel a little low, delated and even depressed. There are lots of reasons why this time of the year is most likely to cause these sorts of feelings – these include financial trouble, from spending a lot of money in December on Christmas gifts and events, feeling tired from going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark, and also feeling a sense of loss as Christmas is over and missing family, or feeling that there is nothing to look forward to.

Feelings like this can worsen if you do not take care of your mental health at this time, so here are some of the things that you can do in order to help alleviate and manage these sorts of feelings that many people have at this time of year…

Take time to do things you enjoy – Focusing on yourself and spending time doing the things that you like is important all the time but especially if you are feeling low. This might be having a night where you pamper yourself, or getting stuck into a hobby that you enjoy. You could even take up a new hobby – creative pursuits can be really good for the brain. Knitting for example is one of these and you can get knitting kits like this //www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/knitting-kits that have all you need to get started off.

Get help to manage your feelings – If you are struggling to cope with the way that you are feeling, or it is getting worse, then it is a good idea to speak to someone and ask for some help. The doctors should be your first port of call. They may be able to refer you to a therapist who will be able to help you and give you techniques to deal with your feelings, or they may be able to give you some medication that will also help.
