Could fashion ever become sustainable?

The short answer is that yes, there are a great many ways that the fashion industry can become more sustainable. But it’s going to take some rather big shifts in attitude and the industry itself will need to adapt. Here are some ways that fashion can become more sustainable.

Circular Economy

One way that fashion can become more sustainable is if we move towards a more circular economy. In this system, businesses and individuals are incentivized to return, reuse, and recycle. Many fashion houses have already started this by offering discounts to customers who bring in old clothes to swap.

Quality over quantity

Even some of the biggest names in fashion, like Stella McCartney and the late Vivienne Westwood, have said that we should buy fewer clothes. Consider investing in a few, high-quality items made from sustainable sources. As long as you pick clothes with timeless cuts and neutral colours, they’re not going to go out of fashion any time soon.

Sustainable materials

More and more manufacturers are looking towards sustainable fabric sources for their clothing. Some fabrics are more sustainable than others because they’re easier to replant. This includes fabric made from organic hemp, which requires little water, is easily grown, and doesn’t use pesticides. Other good options include recycled wool, which is durable, versatile, and can be reused a number of times. The fashion industry needs to steer away from cotton, which uses high amounts of water for production.

Repairing

Making repairs to our clothes is key to a more sustainable future. But we might need to pick up a few new skills. If you don’t know how to sew, start with easy sewing projects. If you don’t know how to knit or crochet, consider knitting or crochet kits. Crochet Kits are also a great way to create an item that will be handed down for generations.

A more sustainable future is possible when it comes to fashion, but much change is needed. We will all have to do our bit, from the people choosing the fabrics to those making the clothes, and that includes us as consumers.
