How trees can help with flood defence

Under normal circumstances we think of flood defences as being huge constructions of concrete and rubble. There is an alternative and it is a lot more pleasing to look at that than something that Hitler would get into at the first sign of a raid by Flying Fortresses. It is the good old humble tree. We all love trees, this is why a Poole Tree Surgeon like those at https://kieranboylandtreeservices.com/ are so important to us all. How does the tree help with the flood defence. It starts out by simply just being there.

Floods happen for two main reasons. The first is the sheer volume of rain that is falling over a short or prolonged period. If it is a huge amount the runoff is way too much for the drains or landscape to take. Trees are able to dissipate and slow the rate of the rainfall, delaying it reaching the ground and also making sure that it doesn’t come as one big deluge.

The second part is beneath the tree in it’s very roots.  These roots grip the soil and also grip the water sucking into the trees roots for nutrients and causing the water to linger. This water retention allows for plants to use it as a resource and they intern “grip” the water adding to the defence.
